Free Download: Beats Antique Animale Mechanique 2012 Mixtape

The tenacious trio of David Satori, Zoe Jakes and Sidecar Tommy have just released the Beats Antique Animale Mechanique 2012 Mixtape. The group said, "For our current tour we decided it'd be fun to one of those "mix tapes" ... we know, there's no tape, but you get it... so we've put together a mix of some new and old beats antique, and wanted to expose you to some of the music we make in our spare time!"  This mixtape features both original and remixed tracks from Beats Antique, as well as Sidecar Tommy, Filastine, Dirtwire, Golden Lips of Silence, and many more, and is available to download here.

Song Of The Day: Beats Antique - Skeleton Key

The tribal fusion electronic wonder known as Beats Antique have just released "Skeleton Key," the first free single off their upcoming album Contraption Vol. 2 which will be available September 18th. The brainchild of tribal belly dancer Zoe Jakes, and co-producers Sidecar Tommy and David Satori has been a welcome and refreshing addition to many summer festival lineups over the past years as this group has grown both creatively and in popularity.

Drawing influence from all over the world, their instrumental style is varied, allowing them to transition seamlessly from downtempo tunes into high energy dance tracks. The energy behind their music is enhanced only by the spectacular belly dancing performances from the groups co-founder, Zoe Jakes.

Beats Antique - "Skeleton Key"


After a stellar performance at Red Rocks, opening for Thievery Corporation, and having performed at numerous festivals this Summer, Beats Antique is showing no signs of slowing down, with a performance at the North Coast Music Festival this Saturday, September 1st in Chicago and then kicking off their Fall North American Tour. Most interesting, perhaps, is that the group will be headlining the Great Convergence in Giza, Egypt during the Winter Solstice from December 20th-22nd alongside such artists as Random Rab, Bluetech and Govinda.

*Note that the now well known vocal hook from this song was sampled from Etta James' "Something's Got a Hold on Me," and was previously sampled by Pretty Lights in the 2006 track "Finally Moving." Pretty Lights used the same sample again two years later in "Finally Moving Remix," and again in 2010 in "Finally Moving James Brown Remix." It boggles my mind that such a great original hook was sampled in not one, not two, but three good songs from a solid artist, but never became widely known until it was used in a shitty house song in 2011.

New Album: Welder - Florescence

Yesterday saw the release of Florescence, the new full-length album from Welder, the second musical project of San Francisco-based producer Brenden Angelides (also know as Eskmo) . For this project, Angelides utilized many more percussive and symphonic elements contrasting with the bass-centric sound of Eskmo. Florescence is very ambitious in its scope; to try to pin it simply to one genre is a futile endeavor. The plucky, upbeat nature of the first track "Run," contrasts sharply with the wild key introduction and rolling, ominous rhythm of "Japan." Angelides is one of the more talented and experimental producers out there today, having collaborated with artists such as Amon Tobin & Beats Antique, You can listen to the entire album for free here, or show your support by downloading it here.
